These easy Button Cookies are lightly sweet, buttery cookies shaped to look like old-fashioned sewing buttons. Two sizes of round cookie cutters and a wooden skewer or straw create the button design, so no specialty cutter is needed. The cookies are soft yet firm enough to hold their shape and make a charming treat for sewing groups, afternoon tea, gifts, or vintage-themed gatherings.

¾cuppowdered sugar
1teaspoonvanilla extract
2tablespoonswhole milk
2cupsall-purpose flourplus additional flour for rolling
1tablespooncornstarch
1teaspoonbaking powder
½teaspoonsalt
Instructions
Preheat the oven to 350°F and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
Cream together the softened butter and powdered sugar. Stir in the vanilla and milk.
Add the flour, cornstarch, baking powder, and salt. Stir until a firm dough forms.
Lightly flour your work surface and roll the dough to approximately ¼-inch thickness.
Cut the dough with the larger cookie cutter.
Center the smaller cutter inside each cookie and press it about halfway into the dough to create the button rim. Do not cut all the way through.
Use the flat end of a wooden skewer or a straw to make two or four button holes in the center.
Transfer to the prepared baking sheet and bake for 8–10 minutes, or until firm.
Repeat with the remaining dough. Cool before serving.
Notes
Unsalted butter or Imperial margarine sticks may be used.
Whole milk and almond milk both work well.
Do not omit the cornstarch or baking powder.
Do not push the smaller cutter completely through the dough.
If you want to thread string or ribbon through the cookies, make sure the button holes go completely through the dough before baking.
Store cooled cookies in an airtight container at room temperature for up to one week.
